The Animal Defense League of Washington County was established in 1982 by 8 concerned members of the community. They rallied to have the current shelter built (the CC Porter Animal Shelter was dedicated in 1986) and made great strides toward animal welfare in this county. By 1995 the group had become fairly inactive, but still sponsored yard sales to help spay and neuter animals in the community and pay for emergency surgery for those in need. In November of 1999 a public meeting was held and the ADL was reinstated.
ADL assisted with 3,617 Spay/Neuter procedures at Margaret Mitchell Spay/Neuter Clinic, 652 Spay/Neuter procedures at other full-service veterinarians, and contributed a total of $85,836.43 in Financial Assistance to residents for Spay and Neuter procedures in 2023. The ADL also answered 2,587 calls requesting financial assistance.
ADL also participated in the Earth Day, Plumb Alley Day, Virginia Highlands Festival, Abingdon Town-Wide Yard Sale, and the Abingdon Visitor's Bureau Festival of Trees events.
ADL's on-going activities include the Community Cat Program which currently hosts 5 organized colonies supported by feeder volunteers, and our Community Goodwill Activities with Faith in Action Food Pantry Pet Food Donations which had 7,782 lbs of food delivered in 2023.
Every spay / neuter surgery performed prevents unwanted births, which is crucial to solving the pet over-population problem. Our evidence, over the past 20 years, shows fewer numbers of animals are entering local shelters and fewer numbers of cats and dogs are euthanized, but the numbers are still not at an acceptable level. Contributing to our efforts to fund surgeries is the best way you can help achieve our mission.
